Husband-and-wife owners Ariel Gonzalez and Judith Shapiro welcome customers into their Theater District restaurant like long-lost friends. Ariel hails from the mountains north of Mendoza, Argentina, and Judith is a flamenco dancer who grew up in Tennessee. The couple met right here on 46th Street and six years later embarked on the adventure of owning a restaurant on the very same street. Sangria 46 reflects their passions. It is a place to savor the flavors, the music, and the warmth of Spanish and Latin American cultures. The couple and their staff offer delicious food and drinks in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The stars of the show are the dozens of tapas dishes and, of course, the multiple varieties of sangria. All-vegetable tapas include baked eggplant, croquetas de yuca, garlic-grilled asparagus and more. Meat-eaters can load up on empanadas Argentinas stuffed with beef, spicy sausage or chicken; datiles con tocino (bacon-wrapped dates); albondigas (meatballs served with quinoa); filet mignon; or grilled lamb chops. If seafood is what you want, try setas rellenas (mushrooms with crabmeat stuffing); fried coconut shrimp with orange-horseradish sauce; or mejillones diablo (mussels in spicy tomato sauce with peppers and onion). There's a full menu of full meals as well, including pollo tamarindo, a boneless chicken breast in tamarind sauce with almonds and plantains. Paella is prepared three ways here; consider adding lobster to make it extra special. Ariel lovingly prepares sangria seven different ways, including mango and cava, to suit every taste. Welcome back, old friend. -- Live music every Monday night from 7 - 9 p.m.!
